I am fascinated by living things: flowers, leaves, animals, and birds. I believe in the basic tenet of botanical illustration: it is not necessary for an art to distort a living subject, because living things are dramatic and beautiful as they are.

It would be impossible for me to follow the traditions of botanical illustration completely, however. I am too much in love with colored glasses, porcelains, intricately patterned cloths, the occasional stenciled border...

After graduating from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, I pursued limited-edition printmaking, using primarily earth tones. When my husband died suddenly in 1985, I found myself using color, perhaps as a way of healing after my loss.

At first I added color to my prints. The desire for more color soon led me to take up watercolor. I feel this medium is ideal for creating the subtle color gradations present in natural things.
